Whilst it can be tempting to “Put off” renewing or starting your insurance as a company, especially at difficult trading throughout in the year. Not having insurance as a company can lead to several legal complications and financial risks.
Here are some key points to consider:
- Legal Penalties: Depending on the type of business and location, certain types of insurance may be legally required. For example, employers’ liability insurance is mandatory in many places. Failure to have the required insurance can result in high fines and even in some cases, legal action.
- Financial Liability: Without insurance, your company would be responsible for all costs associated with claims, such as compensation for injuries, property damage, or legal fees. This can be financially devastating, especially for smaller businesses, the cost of taking out insurance is relatively small in comparison.
- Loss of Business: If your company cannot operate due to an accident or incident and you don’t have business interruption insurance, you could lose significant income. This could jeopardize the future of your business, and you must ask yourself, is this truly worth the risk?
- Reputation Damage: Being uninsured can harm your company’s reputation, making it difficult to attract clients, partners, or investors who may see you as a higher risk. Word of mouth can be amazing for attracting new clients, but it can also be damaging to your reputation.
- Contractual Issues: Some clients or contracts may require proof of insurance before they will do business with you. Without insurance, you could lose out on valuable contracts and opportunities.
- Employee Relations: If an employee is injured at work and you don’t have workers’ compensation insurance, it can lead to expensive legal disputes, increased working costs and strained employee relations.
It’s crucial to assess your company’s specific insurance needs and ensure you have adequate coverage to protect against these risks.
